The Evolution of Computers

In 1941 – Zuse Z3, widely recognized as the first programmable computer, is born.

The Zuse Z3 is nothing like a computer today in terms of cost, capability, size and usability. Much of the development of computer technology of the first 50 years was driven by military and governmental agencies. ARPANET was created for the Department of Defense and drove much of the development of the internet. Fortunately, universities were also driving the technology and people in this realm helped develop email and online gaming.

Other revolutionary events that happened for the last 70 years include:

  • 1953 – The first hard disk drive is introduced by IBM for data storage (or 3.75 MB) -here’s how it looks like. *
  • 1985 – Symbolics.com becomes the first domain ever registered.
  • 1990 – HTML is developed, World Wide Web is born.
  • 1996 – First Internet phone is produced by Nokia.
